The historical transformation of cultural dreams, hopes and fears, the imaginary or symbolism that is associated with of mobility technologies is my main research topic. During the last years, I published about past visions of the future – especially the history of autonomous driving – and about the representation of cars in French and American films. Visual culture and cinema studies are in the center of my intellectual passions.

In December 2016, I received a PhD degree in History of Technology and Cultural Theory from the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the Humboldt-University Berlin. My thesis was supervised in cotutelle by Prof. Anne-Françoise dolor lumbar derecho y pierna Garçon (Paris) and Prof. Hartmut Böhme (Berlin).


It centered on the relations between cultural images and scientific knowledge of the car accident in France and the United States (1945-1975).

During my PhD-thesis, I participated in two transnational and interdisciplinary research projects: First, the Daimler and Benz Foundation hired me to examine the cultural dimensions of autonomous driving (http://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007%2F978-3-662-48847-8_3.pdf) Second, the Forum Vie Mobiles – a think tank supported by the French National Railways SNCF – asked for expertise on the imaginary of trains. My contribution focused on the cultural signification of the railway in cinema.

Currently, my research interests dolor lumbar lado derecho are centered on the history of robotics, computer history and artificial intelligence: I am writing a book (Oct. 2017 – Oct. 2019) about forty years of research on autonomous driving (1960-2000) in Japan, the United States and Germany. This transnational study on pioneers, innovations and technological change is structured in three parts: The US-chapter will present the research on mobile robots at Stanford (Shakey, Stanford Cart), the ALV-program of the DARPA, the researches of Carnegie operacion de columna lumbar recuperacion Mellon University (NavLab), the Demo ’97 (PATH) and Demo I-III of the army. The chapter about Japan is centered on the research of Sadayuki Tsugawa of the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory in Tsukuba. The chapter about the German research efforts details the 4-D approach of Ernst-Dieter Dickmanns and presents the research vehicles VaMoRs, VamP and the Prometheus-program (87-94) of the European Union. The book project is financed by the Ministry of the Federal Armed Forces, Germany.

It focuses on representations of imagined futures—prototypes, media images, and popular discourses of driverless cars. Following the tradition of feminist cultural studies of technoscience, we ask in our introduction how these new techno-imaginaries of autonomous driving are gendered and racialized. We aim to explore if the future user of an autonomous car is gendered or degendered in the current media discourse. The four articles explore what kinds of images are used, what promises are made, and how the discourse about autonomous driving is influenced by gendered norms. Some authors emphasize that self-driving vehicles could encourage pluralized forms of masculinity. Nonetheless, all authors conclude that driverless cars alone will not degender the driver but rather encourage a multiplication of gendered and racialized technologies of mobility.

Une qualité spécifique du film en tant que source historique est sa manière insconsciente de nous donner accès à l´imagologie, aux représentations dominantes, aux désirs et peurs collectives, le Zeitgeist d´une époque. Nous proposons de se concentrer sur les techniques de la vie quotidienne au cinéma. For the history of technology as an academic discipline it may be important to look further into fiction films. Cinema has the quality to give us a picture of the unconscious of an era and to open the imaginary of technology for historians. This article is an appeal to use more cinematic sources for an image history of technological objects. A specific quality of film as historic source is his capacity to give us acces to the dominant representations, collective desires and fears, the imagology and the Zeitgeist of an era. Our purpose is to concentrate on technologies of everyday life in film. The article presents a case study about the three forms of car accidents in the cinema of Jacques Tati : Real, avoided and simulated accidents are showing that the frontier escoliosis lumbar leve between normalcy and rupture is precarious. Les apports sur les imaginaires et les techniques présentés dans cet ouvrage offrent des approche… more Les apports sur les imaginaires et les techniques présentés dans cet ouvrage offrent des approches différentes et variées, parfois en contraste estenosis lumbar et néanmoins en dialogue, sur le rôle de l’imaginaire dans la construction de nos représentations sociales des techniques. Ils montrent concrètement comment l’imaginaire, loin de se cantonner à jouer un rôle fonctionnel pour faire avancer ou accepter l’innovation, contribue à un questionnement profond et parfois contradictoire des évolutions technologiques dans toute leur complexité. Les différentes contributions analysent les transformations des imaginaires des objets techniques dans les différentes étapes de l’innovation (avion, robots, voitures autonomes, imagerie médicale, etc.), retracent la mise en imaginaire des objets techniques dans la culture visuelle (affiches, cinéma) et littéraire, interrogent le rôle de l’imaginaire dans la conception et le design, questionnent la relation hernia lumbar entre mythes et techno-imaginaires ainsi que la métaphorisation des catastrophes techniques. Ce volume dresse un panorama actuel des recherches sur l’imaginaire des techniques en croisant la socio-anthropologie, la philosophie, l’histoire des techniques, les sciences de l’information et de la communication, tout comme la littérature. En s’intéressant au symbolisme des techniques à travers l’histoire et les contextes culturels, l’ouvrage contribue à « mettre en culture » et « en société » les techniques anciennes, contemporaines et émergentes.
