Wednesday January 9th, 7:30 pm at Kaleideum North the Forsyth Astronomical Society will have its regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The program for this month’s meeting will be a video and discussion on an episode from The Sky at Night series entitled: “Telescope on a Plane!”

This telescope, called SOFIA, the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, is a Boeing 747 SP aircraft modified to carry a 2.7-meter (106-inch) reflecting telescope (with an effective diameter of 2.5 meters or 100 dolor lumbar embarazo inches). Saturday February 9th, the Forsyth Astronomical Society will host an observation at Stone Mountain State Park in the family camping area. This is the first observation at this venue for the 2019 season. This is primarily an event for the campers of the park but the public is welcome to attend. The sun will set at 5:56 pm and we will start showing objects as darkness allows. Mars and the waxing crescent Moon will be visible early and for most of the evening. Moon set is at 10:27 pm. This IS a weather dependent event. This post and the club’s Facebook page will be updated to reflect a final weather call on Friday February 8th. Needless to say, preparation for the cold is of the utmost importance. You’ll definitely want to bundle up in layers for sure. Another trick we often use when observing in the cold is to use the “Hot Hands” brand of hand warmers. A few of the regular hand warmer packs, or the super sized ones if you want to serious, pinned to the escoliosis leve lower back, near bottom of your rib cage, on your base layer is highly recommended (think of these as preheaters for blood flowing through your kidneys). Maintaining your core temperature is the key to staying warm in cold conditions. We have found this method makes a real and noticeable difference in comfort in these conditions. These hand warmers are available from many sources such as Walmart or Walgreen’s which whom who also carries their own store brand of back warmer pads, same sort of item just bigger that work well too.

Stub Mandrel Update 12/28: The observation for tomorrow night has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. The clouds are just going to be too thick and there is a chance for rain during the observation hours. Saturday December 29th, the Forsyth Astronomical Society will be hosting an observation event in the upper parking area of Pilot Mountain State Park. We will primarily be highlighting bright comet 46/P Wirtanen on it’s exit from the inner solar system. It is currently near constellation Auriga and Lynx. The observation will begin shortly after sunset which is at 5:16 PM. There will be a couple of less prominent comets and other celestial objects we can show until it gets dark enough for our primary target. Another year has passed and we here at the FAS would like to thank everyone that came out to any of our events this past year. With the weather being as it has been, we have had more cancellations this past year than any in recent memory. The public’s enthusiasm when the weather cooperated was rejuvenating and soothed the disappointment of those cancelled cloudy nights. Thank you.

The club’s online calendar has been updated to reflect our scheduled upcoming events for 2019. We have made a few changes and reduced some of our typical summer dates and have replaced them with spring, fall and escoliosis dextroconvexa winter dates. We have done this due to the late hour of sunset and typical historical weather during the summer months. Hopefully we can actually get in more hours under the stars with the changes. There are still a few dates that are being negotiated and may be added or changed so, check back often keep up with the latest information. Our final events for 2018 will be our annual FAS holiday potluck Dec 12th, this is in lieu of our typical monthly meeting and there is no program for this event. We have also added a comet observation at Pilot Mountain State Park for December 29th, Comet 46P/Wirtanen will be making a close approach mid-late this month and is forecast to possibly become a naked eye object.
